Anaethesiology

We provide anaesthesia services to patients of Gauhati Medical College and Hospital and Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital. Pre-Anaesthesia Evaluation Clinic provides services ‘for the optimization surgical patients’ for various surgical procedures. The Pain clinic takes care of chronic pain patients with interventional and non-interventional therapies. This department also looks after Intensive Care Unit for adult patients.

Neurology

Department of Neurology was established in the year 1986 under Principal Dr. B.M. Goswami. First HOD was Prof. Ajaya Mahanta. Neurophysiology laboratory was established in 1987. DM (Neurology) courses was started in 2008 with two seats. In 2020 DM seats were increased to four after NMC inspection. Department of Neurology, Gauhati Medical College & Hospital is one of the most well equipped Neuroscience Centre in North East India.

ENT

The Department of ENT Gauhati Medical College and Hospital was first established in the year 1960 headed by then Principal Prof. S.N Sarma MS (ENT). The Department was then started with 30beds in Panbazar and thereafter shifted to Bhangagarh. Since then the Department has been sincerely rendevouring service both to patients and teaching of PG and UG students.

Pediatrics

Gauhati Medical College, the second Medical College of Assam, was established in 1960. Pediatric patients were initially managed in the Department of Medicine. Pediatrics was separated from the department of Medicine in 1977 with Prof. A.C.Baruah as Head of the Department and Dr. H. C.Sharma as Assistant Professor. Dr R.K. Sharma and Dr. Shanti Bhuyan Barman were appointed as Resident Physician and Registrar respectively. Because of the untiring effort of late Prof.A.C. Baruah, he was able to start post graduate classes in Pediatrics in Gauhati Medical College in the later part of seventies. MCI recognized both the diploma and degree awarded by Gauhati University. The department was started at Bagri Children Hospital in Panbazar with 40 beds and 3 paying cabins. The department was later shifted to the present permanent building of Gauhati Medical College at Bhangagarh in 1983. The department of is now situated at 2nd Floor of the main building of Gauhati Medical College & Hospital.

About us

Dr. John Berry White, MRCS, a British Surgeon of the East India Company, was the pioneer to start Health Education and health care in Assam. He established a medical school known as 'Berry White Medical School' at Dibrugarh, Assam in 1898-99. In course of time this medical school was upgraded and on 3rd Nov., 1947 the Assam Medical College, Dibrugarh was established and it stands as the first medical college in Assam.

With increasing demands for health care and health education, the need for more medical colleges in Assam was keenly felt. The State Government in 1959 headed by Mr. B.P. Chaliha, the then Chief Minister of Assam, Mr. Fakaruddin Ali Ahmed, the then Finance Minister, and Mr. Rupram Brahma as the then Medical Minister of Assam decided to have a second medical college in Assam. On 7th Nov., 1959 the State Government set up an expert committee to go into the matter and submit their report.
